Reggie ffinch-Leigh, with his Colombian wife Rosita, has sold up his business for a fortune and retired from the street markets of Soho to Mortimer Towers, a Victorian mansion in the depths of Shropshire. Suddenly, he finds himself broke and forced to revert to trading in order to make a living. This time, though, he’s dealing in the precarious and unpredictable area of horses and antiques. He doesn’t always get it right, but with his infectious charm, and a lot of luck, he usually manages to get himself out of trouble. That is, until he gets an order for two hundred live moles to send across the Irish Sea….

“Many of us still know John Challis as the irrepressible Boycie, but perhaps we should get to know him as a novelist in the mould of the late Tom Sharpe. This is an assured, irreverent and very funny debut.”
Brian Viner, author and journalist

John Challis knew he wanted to be an actor from the moment he saw Peter Pan live on stage, aged eight. By the time he was nineteen, he was on the road with a troupe of travelling actors, taking plays to schools all over the country. His father wasn’t impressed, but John was determined to follow his instincts, and nor did he ever lose his interest in sport, or Rock’n’Roll or, frankly, the opposite sex. His career and colourful private life seemed permanently poised between crises and highs, until by 1984, in his forties and with two marriages behind him, he had emerged as a leading character in Britain’s most successful ever TV comedy series, Only Fools & Horses. His two published volumes of autobiography have been received with great enthusiasm and highly praised for their wit and candour. This success prompted John into writing his first novel.

John Challis is available for interview. Reggie, A Stag At Bay is available from all good bookshops. Signed copies can be ordered from www.wigmorebooks.com from 8th October priced £10 including p&p.
